The Simbur Cahaya Journal is a scholarly journal managed by Law Faculty of Sriwijaya University. The journal’s name is closely linked to the history of the people of South Sumatra, particularly the existence of the Simbur Cahaya manuscript in ancient times. The Kitab Simbur Cahaya is a historical artefact and the work of Ratu Sinuhun (the wife of the ruler of Palembang who reigned from 1636 to 1650). Some historians believe that the Kitab Simbur Cahaya was the first legal code adopted by the people of the archipelago, taking the form of written laws. Etymologically, ‘Simbur Cahaya’ is defined as ‘a spark of light’, with light being interpreted as a beacon in the civilisation of South Sumatra.

The Simbur Cahaya Journal is the first academic law journal established at Law Faculty of Sriwijaya University. The first issue was published in June 1993 (Volume 1, Number 1, June 1993 edition) and was still in print form. In 2017, the Simbur Cahaya Journal transitioned to a digital format, publishing via OJS from Volume 24 to the present.

This journal focuses on original articles in the field of law, with the aim of raising awareness amongst researchers, academics, practitioners and the general public of the importance of contributing to the development of an inclusive and adaptive legal discipline.

The journal is a peer-reviewed journal which aims to publish new work of the highest calibre across the full range of legal scholarship, which includes but not limited to works in the law, Private Law, Criminal Law, legal philosophy, sociology of law, Socio-legal studies, International Law, Environmental Law, Islamic Law, Agrarian Law, Administrative Law, Criminal Procedural Law, Commercial Law, Constitutional Law, Human Rights Law, Civil Procedural Law and Adat Law. All papers submitted to this journal should be written in English. Principaly, the journal's editorial policy is to favour contributions which will be of interest to a wide cross-section of its readership - contributions which, if specialised, nevertheless serve to bring out matters of broader interest or importance within their specialisation. However, articles which are not included in the area of law and social sciences are not covered and out of the scope of this journal.

The Editorial Board shall not be responsible for views expressed in every article.
